Prevention, Education & Outreach

Independence House Prevention, Education and Outreach department provides the following services to the community:

Prevention
Independence House partners with select community organizations, schools, faith-based organizations and businesses to create a culture free from intimate partner violence through primary prevention practices. These are long-term partnerships with those who share our passion to change social norms regarding violence.

Currently Independence House Prevention staff is partnering with Barnstable High School and Harwich High School to implement Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP). This primary prevention initiative empowers students to stand up as bystanders against violence.

This project is funded by the Cape Youth Force, a program of the Cape & Islands Youth Congress, The Cape Cod Foundation, Barnstable UMASS Extension/4H and YMCA/Cape Cod.

Education
We provide educational workshops for youth, parents, professionals and community leaders on many topics. Our trained education staff will tailor a curriculum to your group.

In March of 2010 the Massachusetts Senate unanimously passed anti-bullying legislation requiring all schools to address bullying.

Outreach
Independence House Outreach staff will come to your school, community organization, religious institution or business and provide basic information regarding our agency services along with a brief discussion of intimate partner violence. We often host and/or organize awareness raising events in the community and encourage the support of our neighbors.
