On Friday, October 21, Congressman Bill Keating met with the staff at Independence House
for a tour of the agency and an intimate talk about domestic violence. The visit was scheduled on the congressman’s White Ribbon Campaign, promoting men’s awareness of, and commitment to help end domestic violence. Independence House department directors, counselors and advocates (pictured right) from the VOCA Court program, Education/Outreach program and Sexual Assault program as well as Executive Director Lysetta Hurge-Putnam (pictured below with Congressman Keating) met with the congressman along with Board Co-Presidents Sandra Cashen and Lauren Kanzer.
Congressman Keating shared a number of the challenges he often faced with prosecuting cases that involve abusive partner relationships during his role as District Attorney in Norfolk County. The congressman and Independence House touched on statistics and catalysts of domestic violence issues in our community. Independence House staff brought to the table the positive and important role the agency fills in the High Risk Task Force; housing stabilization, education and outreach in our community, and some of the challenges the agency faces with awareness and funding.
